nother day, another tax-diminished, mortgage-shrivelled dollar. You get home, relax, ready to tune out in front of the TV. And there it is: a coup d’etat! In…in…some country somewhere. (That’s a country? Never  would’ve guessed! Always thought it was a skin condition!) Rebels have stormed the presidential palace! Surrounded the radio/tv station! Closed the airport! The president has disappeared, believed dead! No! He’s still in control! No! He’s gone into exile! The leader of the rebels promises elections! Soon! Just as soon as…

But you’ve switched over, haven’t you?  You’re watching the cartoon channel. After all, another coup in some McDonald’s forsaken place at the edge of the world? Why is it even on the news, you wonder? It’s just how they do things there.

But consider: this didn’t just happen suddenly. This is not just a sixty-second media event. It required planning. Soldiers had to be recruited. Arms smuggled. Officials bribed.  External support and sympathy garnered. In other words, planning, and lots of it, too. How long has it been in the works? And will today’s liberator become tomorrow’s president-in-exile? Is there, even now, an understudy waiting in the wings, biding his time for a speaking part in this multi-act drama?

Chances are that yes, someone else already has his or her eye on the prize. Now put yourself in their place: how would you do it? Recruit soldiers? Arm them? Make those crucial, make-or-break decisions? And how do you deal with the inevitable setbacks?
